Oxford Plow Queen Wins Ontario Title at IPM 2018 held in Pain Court (Chatham Kent)


 

Oxford County has done well at the 2018 IPM , winning the provincial plowing queen for 2018-19.
Oxford plowmen Glen Sharples, Embro, won Class 2, Group 4 (9 in the class).
In the antique mounted Class 6, Group 3, Jim Cox, Innerkip won first, Mike Lassam, Tillsonburg,won second (13 in the class).
Don Wison coached our Oxford queen in the plowing competition.
In the Northumberland contestant, Apryl Linton, plowed with horses; hard work for tiny girl but she had a million dollar smile. (twenty -five contestants)



Derika Nauta won the Ontario Plowing Queen championship. Christine (Gee)Seitz was the last Oxford representative to win this provincial honour in 1985. The award was presented September 21 at the John D. Bradley Convention Centre in Chatham.

Twenty-five queen contestants, each selected to represent their region of the province, vied for the title of provincial queen at the 2018 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo held in Pain Court (Chatham Kent), September. 18-22.
The contestents were assigned points based on appearance, deportment, plowing abilities, an interview, and a speech on an agriculture-related topic. This was delivered on the Pride Main Stage in front of a large crowd of IPM visitors.
The top five contestants were attributed additional points based on an impromptu speech delivered during the Celebration of Excellence Gala held on the Friday evening at the John D. Bradley Convention Centre in Chatham. During the Gala, Derika Nauta of Oxford County was crowned the 2018-19 Ontario Queen of the Furrow. She was honoured with a scholarship and the use of a new car. This was provided by the Ontario Mutual Insurance Association and Ontario Plowmen's Association for the duration of her reign, in order to promote the IPM.

All five finalists received $100.

The first Runner Up was Josie Linton of Durham
Second RunnerUp was Kayla Manley of Stormont
Other finalists were Laura Fullerton of Bruce and Grace Mullen of Essex

The BMO, Bank of Montreal Scholarship winners were:
Grace Mullen of Essex and Ashley Buck of Peterborough.
Josie Linton of Durham was also honoured with the title of Miss Friendship.

The queens plowing contest was held on Wednesday September 19 and the top five winners were:
1st:         Amy Pyenburg of Oxford Blenheim
2nd:       Grace Mullen of Essex
3rd:        Cassandra Ferguson of York
4th:        Christine Wilkinson of Halton
5th:        Serena Allardyce of Brant-Six Nations

They were honoured with gifts from Provincial Committee co-Chairs Sheila Marshall and Vanessa Scott.

Tuesday, September 18 was politician's day. Premier Doug Ford plowed with a Ford whilst Andrea Horvath plowed with an orange Nuffield tractor owned by Mike Lassam from Tillsonburg.
On Thursday, September 20 was a rain day. Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay led the parade of plowmen out to the field dressed in his shirtsleeves and got soaked, as did the plowmen. One inch of rain fell. The plowmen persevered and completed their lands. Only the horse plowing was cancelled. Oxford competitors, Glen Sharples; Don Wilson;, Jim Cox and Mike Lassam were among the winners.

155 competitors competed.
