ONTARIO HAS A VAST TRAINING SYSTEM IN PLOWMANSHIP
The International Plowing Match represents a vast training system in the
ancient art of plowmanship-a training system which in 1940 had its bases in
more than 60 branches of the Ontario Plowmen's Association throughout the
province, all operated under the Agriculture Societies Branch of the Ontario
Department of Agriculture. It is through the operation of those branch
organizations, with their annual plowing matches, that junior and senior farmers
are taught better plowing, through competition, and are encouraged to contest for
honors in such wider spheres of effort as the International.Without those
branch organizations and their annual matches, it is doubtful if the
International Plowing Match could function. Those branches are the equivalent to
a vast military training system or to minor clubs where professional baseball
players are farmed and the best selected for the major clubs. The champions of
tomorrow are developed by the branch organizations of the province.
"The importance of the branches cannot be stressed
too greatly," J.A.Carroll,secretary-manager of the International, stated.
"They provide the contestants for the big event every year."
SCOPE OF SYSTEM
The scope of this agriculture training system is shown by the list of plowing matches held in 1940.
The list was compiled by Mr.Caroll as follows, with the dates of the Match, the
sponsoring branch, and the location of each match:
